6 year Programme in Medicine and Surgery

Six-year single cycle degree in Medicine and Surgery (Rome campus)

One of the most qualifying features of the Program is the complete integration of basic and clinical sciences. This will be achieved through a multidisciplinary approach and an early involvement in patient management which includes moral and ethical issues, as well as legal responsibilities which are at the basis of the profession. In addition medical anthropology, bioethics and medical humanities will be emphasized as well as the ability to communicate with the patient and the family. It will provide a strong specific background, and theoretical and practical preparation in medical practice and methodology, as well as a high level of professional decisions and operational independence in terms of ability to face and solve the main health problems from the preventive, diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic point of view.

Learning objectives

The Program will provide complete integration of learning objectives of European and US curricula. The curriculum is designed also to help students prepare for the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) Step 1 and Step 2. Students will benefit from high quality teaching and learning designed to encourage active participation and support independent thinking.

They will acquire the ability to identify the state of health or illness of individuals on the basis of the knowledge of biopathology and pathophysiology. In addition they will develop skills and general experience in the field of Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics and Obstetrics, as well as Medical and Surgical specialities.

Career opportunities

The Medicine and Surgery degree course is designed for students who wish to become qualified medical practitioners. A various range of careers are open to medical graduate. In addition, students who will graduate in Medicine and Surgery

at Università Cattolica will be able to practice their profession not only in Europe but also in developing countries. Due to the innovative curriculum, they will also be able to start a career in both basic and clinical scientific research.

Entry requirements

Admitted students need to hold a high school diploma,conferred after a minimum of 12 years of previous schooling (from the beginning of primary school to the end of high school) and that satisfies the requirements for entry into the university in the awarding country.

 

Language requirements - English language proficiency

For applicants whose first language is not English they will need to either:

■ Have a TOEFL iBT overall score of at least 80; or an Academic IELTS overall score of at least 6.0 or a TOEFL Computer Based of at least 213; or a TOEFL Paper Based of at least 550; or a Cambridge ESOL FCE Grade B; or

■ Have attended a high school where English is the language of teaching. The English Language Certificate (if applicable) will be requested upon enrolment in September 2014.

Admission test locations

Admission to the 6-year program in Medicine and Surgery is subject to the evaluation of the written test that will take place on April 3, 2014. The minimum score required to pass the test is 35 points out of 100. Candidates may choose to

sit the test at one of the following locations:

■ Rome, Italy

■ São Paulo, Brazil

■ Tel Aviv, Israel

■ Istanbul, Turkey

■ London, United Kingdom

 

Admission test content

The written test consists of 100 multiple choice questions divided as follows:

■ 95 questions on psycho-attitudinal subjects (logic, visual space reasoning, text understanding, attention and precision, numerical reasoning, problem solving)

■ 5 questions on religious culture

Candidates have 100 minutes to complete the test.

Evaluation follows the criteria indicated below:

■ 1 point for each correct answer

■ minus 0.25 point for each wrong answer

■ no points for no answer

Admission feedback

The program has a maximum capacity of 52 places divided as follows:

■ 30 places reserved to Italian and EU citizens residing anywhere and to non-EU citizens legally residing in Italy

■ 20 places reserved to non-EU citizens residing abroad

■ 2 places reserved to Chinese citizens participating in the "Marco Polo" Project

Candidates will receive an admission feedback on April 18, 2014. Two final rankings will be produced:

■ one for EU and non-EU candidates residing in Italy;

■ one for non-EU candidates residing abroad

In both final rankings, in case of a tie the youngest candidate will prevail.

Admitted candidates will be asked to pay the sum of € 4,000 by April 18, 2014 as a deposit to secure their place in the program. The aforementioned sum will be deducted from the A.Y. 2014/2015 tuition fees.

Should the admitted candidates not pay the deposit by the deadline they shall be considered as 'withdrawn'; vacant places shall be made available to other candidates according to merit ranking.

Tuition is € 15,000 per annum.
